HERZ: The Fund Is Now a CLO-Focused Credit Vehicle

HERZ is no longer primarily a Caribbean Basin equity fund. Shareholders approved a new strategy in June 2025, and from July 1, 2025 the fund changed its name to Herzfeld Credit Income Fund and shifted toward credit instruments, especially equity and junior-debt tranches of collateralized loan obligations (CLOs).

What the filing establishes

The July 2026 prospectus states that the fund’s primary objective is risk-adjusted total return, with current income as a secondary objective. This is materially different from the former Caribbean-focused capital-appreciation mandate, so historical descriptions and comparisons based on the old portfolio are no longer reliable.

An SEC-filed February 2026 fact sheet reported estimated net asset value of $19.67 per share and a $14.735 closing price, a 25.09% discount. Its largest disclosed allocations included fixed-income closed-end funds, cash, CLO closed-end funds, CLO equity, and CFO equity. Those figures were unaudited snapshots as of February 27, not current intrinsic values.

What to verify next

CLO equity is exposed to leveraged-loan defaults, recoveries, refinancing conditions, and changes in cash distributions. Investors should track updated NAV, the discount or premium to NAV, portfolio leverage, distributions, and the share count under the shelf prospectus rather than treat a discount alone as evidence of undervaluation.
